The Saab 37 Viggen is one of the most distinctive combat aircraft ever built in Europe. Developed by Saab AB in the 1960s, the Viggen was the backbone of the Swedish Air Force throughout much of the Cold War.

The aircraft had been designed to operate from short and temporary runways—including Swedish country roads—as part of Sweden's unique defense doctrine. With its powerful RM8 engine, canard-delta configuration and advanced electronics for its time, the Viggen was one of Europe's most capable multirole aircraft.

Some highlights:

  • First flight: 1967
  • Top Speed: Over Mach 2
  • Operational Service: 1971—2005
  • Roles: Chaser, Attack, Reconnaissance and School Version

SK37E — training and electronic warfare version

The aircraft coming to Sola is a SK37E, a two-seat training version further developed for electronic warfare. This variant was used for training and special missions, and differs from the single-seat combat variants by its lengthened cockpit.

The SE-DXO is today one of very few airworthy Viggen aircraft — and the only one operated in civilian terms.

The sound alone is worth the trip. The Viggen is known for its distinctive afterburner roar and powerful appearance — this is true jet nostalgia at its rawest.

Swedish Air Force Historic Flight

SwaHF is a non-profit organization that aims to preserve and operate historic Swedish military aircraft in flying condition. The organization consists of volunteers with backgrounds from the Swedish Air Force and civil aviation, and is based at several bases in Sweden.

They operate several iconic aircraft types, including:

  • Saab 32 Lansen
  • Saab 35 Dragon
  • Saab 37 Viggen

Their work ensures that new generations get to experience Swedish aviation history — not only in museums, but in the air.

We are looking forward!!
