The KC-135 is an aerial refueling aircraft developed by Boeing in the 1950s, and has been in continuous service in the U.S. Air Force since 1957. That makes it one of the longest-serving military aircraft in the world -- and it remains in active operational use every single day.

The task is simple to explain but formidable to perform: to refuel other aircraft while both are in the air. It allows fighters, bombers and transport aircraft to operate over far greater distances than they otherwise could -- and is a critical part of NATO's operational capability.

Facts about the KC-135 Stratotanker:

  • Manufacturer: Boeing
  • First flight: 1956
  • Max Starting Weight: Approx. 146,000 kg
  • Fuel capacity: Approx. 90,000 kg of transferable fuel
  • Wingspan: 39.9 meters

Operating in the background

The KC-135 is not necessarily common, although we at Sola have had several visits recently in connection with the Cold Response military exercise. The KC-135 happily operates in the background - far above the clouds, unseen by most. We bring the machine into static where you get a unique opportunity to see these machines up close.
